We must remember that one determined person can make a significant difference, and that a small group of determined people can change the course of history.

Headwaters Project-I

Headwaters Project-I a Success!
1000 Acres to be Protected in the Piscataquog RegionHPI Map

More than 1000 acres that drain to Cold, Rand, and Brennan Brooks will have been conserved at the culmination of a two and a half year coordinated effort led by the Francestown Land Trust, the Piscataquog Land Conservancy, and the Monadnock Conservancy. Other key participants in the project were a number of landowners, the Francestown, Greenfield, and Lyndeborough Conservation Commissions, and the Society for Protection of New Hampshire Forests.

The 13,000 acres that comprise these watersheds include some of the richest wildlife habitat remaining in southern New Hampshire – encompassing the south side of Crotched Mountain, the north side of Rose Mountain, and portions of Francestown, Greenfield, and Lyndeborough. Data collected by the PLC and St. Anselm College indicate that the three brooks currently have high water quality and support a healthy diversity of aquatic life; the State has identified Rand Brook as a standard by which other cool water streams are evaluated.

The project added approximately 625 acres to the Rand Brook Conservation Area in Greenfield and Francestown and 20 acres near the Crotched Mountain Town Forest. In Lyndeborough one conservation block on Cold Brook was doubled in size to almost 500 acres, and 51 acres were added to a second larger core area.

On September 28 more than 75 supporters and neighbors of the project gathered at the Francestown home of Ben and Kate Taylor and David Taylor and Susie Sargent to celebrate this major accomplishment, explore some of the newly protected acreage, and learn about projects still in progress that will increase conserved land in this specific.

Thank you to all of those who contributed to the success of Headwaters Project-I!
