Unlocking the Mystery of Pulpit Rock

May 22, 2022 @ 11:00 am 1:30 pm

Join Richard Moore, who has been working in New Hampshire as a HydroGeologist with the U.S. Geological Survey since 1983, to unlock the geological mysteries of one of our most visited properties: Pulpit Rock Conservation Area in Bedford, NH! This event is co-sponsored by the Bedford Conservation Commisison.

Early in May 1988, after returning from his first walking tour through Pulpit Rock Conservation Area with his in-laws, Richard Moore’s father-in-law, Col. Harry N. Tufts, challenged him.  He said, “You’re a geologist; you figure out what caused Pulpit Rock.”  Little did he know where that challenge would lead him…

Pulpit Rock is a large plunge basin carved into the bedrock, well away from any river, with only a small brook passing nearby.  This large erosional feature is partly filled with sediments.  However, the exposed part measures about 42 feet deep and 23 feet wide – how did that happen?!

Join us on Sunday, May 22, 2022, 11 am – 1:30 pm, when we will explore the geology of the Pulpit Rock Conservation Area!

Difficulty: Easy to moderate with some elevation gains

What to Wear/Bring:

  • Dress for ticks and/or bring repellent
  • Sturdy footwear
  • Water

Getting There:

GPS address for trail head is 90 Pulpit Road in Bedford.

Be advised that when coming from New Boston Road, Pulpit Road is one way the wrong way.  Take Walsch Road which is a short spur that provides access to Pulpit Road.  The parking area is on the west side of Pulpit Road, very near the intersection of Pulpit Road and Indian Rock Road.  It is at the bottom of a long downhill, and just beyond the Indian Rock Road intersection and a bridge over Pulpit Brook.

Be Aware: The Piscataquog Land Conservancy (PLC) offers events to allow people to connect with our environment. Individuals participating are responsible for their own safety, and for knowing and respecting their own physical capabilities and limitations. Your event registration indicates that: you assume responsibility for yourself and any guests accompanying you, you agree to follow the instructions of the Trip Leader in order to minimize risk, you understand that the Trip Leader and/or any PLC staff present are not necessarily trained in wilderness rescue, first aid, or emergency medicine, and are present only to provide cohesion to the group.

Dog Policy: Except for service dogs, dogs are not allowed at PLC sponsored events. Some of our outings include environments or activities not suitable for dogs. We also strive to make our outings inclusive to all people. Many people – landowners, trip leaders, and participants – might be uncomfortable with dogs. There is also a concern for a dog-on-dog conflict. Thank you for understanding

COVID-19: Please monitor yourself for symptoms of COVID-19 prior to the event. If you or someone in your household becomes ill or have had a known exposure to COVID-19, please stay home and notify us that you will not be in attendance.

Before you register: We ask that you please notify us immediately if your plans to attend a PLC event change by emailing plc@plcnh.org or calling 603-487-3331. Our outings are planned and managed by dedicated volunteers and our attendance caps are often low to ensure a great experience for attendees. If you’re not able to make it, we’d appreciate the opportunity to open a space for someone else.
