Welcome Spring! A Walk at the Potanipo Rail Trail

March 20, 2022 @ 1:00 pm 2:30 pm

Location: Brookline, NH

Can it be? Is it true? Spring is, we are told, on the way!

Join PLC’s Jill Ketchen and Brookline Conservation Commission’s Tom Rogers for a casual out-and-back walk along the Nissitissit River via the Potanipo Rail Trail and Mary’s Trail in Brookline, NH to celebrate the arrival of the spring equinox. We will discuss seasonal changes happening in plants and wildlife behaviors to watch and listen for – all while enjoying fresh air and some exercise.

We’ll also learn a bit about the history of the railroad that once went through Brookline and serviced the Fresh Pond Ice Co., which was established on the shores of the lake in 1890 and thrived until 1935, when it was destroyed by fire.

This is an out-and-back hike of about a mile, and is relatively flat and an easy hike/walk. Families are welcome!

This event is co-sponsored by the Brookline Conservation Commission. Thank you to the Brookline Historical Society for providing notes on the history of the trail.

Be Aware: The Piscataquog Land Conservancy (PLC) offers events to allow people to connect with our environment. Your event registration indicates that: you assume responsibility for yourself and any guests accompanying you, you agree to follow the instructions of the Trip Leader in order to minimize risk, you understand that the Trip Leader and/or any PLC staff present are not necessarily trained in wilderness rescue, first aid, or emergency medicine, and are present only to provide cohesion to the group.

What to Wear/Bring:

  • Sturdy shoes or boots

  • Water and a snack

Where to Meet: The parking area and trailhead is in between Bingham Lumber and the Sunoco on the east side of Route 13.

Dog Policy: Except for service dogs, dogs are not allowed at PLC sponsored events. Some of our outings include environments or activities not suitable for dogs. We also strive to make our outings inclusive to all people. Many people – landowners, trip leaders, and participants – might be uncomfortable with dogs. There is also a concern for a dog-on-dog conflict. Thank you for understanding

COVID-19: Please monitor yourself for symptoms of COVID-19 prior to the event. If you or someone in your household becomes ill or have had a known exposure to COVID-19, please stay home and notify us that you will not be in attendance.

Before you register: We ask that you please notify us immediately if your plans to attend a PLC event change by emailing plc@plcnh.org or calling 603-487-3331. Our outings are planned and managed by dedicated volunteers and our attendance caps are often low to ensure a great experience for attendees. If you’re not able to make it, we’d appreciate the opportunity to open a space for someone else.
