A Look Back: PLC Land Stewardship in 2021

They’ve done it again!

As of December 31, 2021 PLC has completed the 2021 conservation easement monitoring season.

During the 2021 season, 128 properties were monitored by 84 volunteers, totaling over 500 hours of volunteer work.

⁠A tremendous thank you to all who offered their time, energy and expertise — you are literally the eyes and ears of PLC and our work would not be possible without you.

Stewardship Projects and Workdays

2021 was an ambitious year for trail work projects and property maintenance. The PLC Stewardship Committee worked with PLC staff and volunteers to improve trails, install signage, increase accessibility, and improve habitat health and vitality.

Here’s a look at some of what was accomplished.

In April four PLC volunteers removed two large trees at the Black Brook Preserve in Goffstown, NH. Tree work continued in April at the Florence M. Tarr Wildlife Sanctuary with two volunteers removing a tree.

PLC’s summer workday in June brought eleven volunteers and PLC Staff together to install a bridge and signposts at Blackbriar Woods and Black Brook Preserves.

Muddy sections of trail at the Florence M. Tarr Wildlife Sanctuary were replaced with stonework by PLC staff and volunteers in July.

Trail work continued in July at Ferrin Pond Nature Preserve in Weare, with six volunteers putting in a day’s work.

Five volunteers worked in September to fortify stone walls at Rose Mountain Preserve in Lyndeborough in response to off-road vehicles driving on the property.

PLC staff and four volunteers cleared existing trails of downed trees and installed trail markers at the Burke Family Wildlife Sanctuary in Deering in November.
Making your way to the summit of Rose Mountain? It should be easier to navigate now, thanks to the work of volunteers marking the summit trail in November.
Also in November, boundaries of the Florence Dow Greenway in Goffstown were surveyed and marked with the help of a surveyor and six volunteers.
PLC teamed up with the Town of Bedford to clear an access path at Pulpit Rock Conservation Area in November.
